I love places that make great food and am not bothered by a lack of decor. Paulees serves great food and a lot of it.
Chicken stew and collard are delicious. -

When it comes to authentic Caribbean food in the Atlanta area, Paulee's Place II offers some of the best. Sometimes, the best food can be found in the most unexpected places. This is a prime example. Paulee's is a hole in the wall located in the Barclay Village shopping center on 41 (Cobb Parkway), on a stretch with a bunch of car dealerships, behind a Waffle House.
This restaurant is small, humble, and no-frills. A lot of customers come here for takeout. If you decide to dine in, there's plenty of seating. There are booths, tables, and TVs. It's not much to look at, but it's functional. I estimate the dining room can seat about 40-50 people. Whether you dine in or take out, you place your order at the counter with Paulee, the owner, or one of her assistants. Paulee and her staff are friendly and I'm sure that combined with the great food is what keeps customers coming back. I have coworkers that come here on a weekly basis.
The menu setup is primarily meat and two (meat entree with two sides). These run about $11-17 each. Meat examples include jerk, stewed, and curry chicken, jerk baby back ribs, curry goat, oxtail, beef stew, tilapia, beef and turkey eggplant, and griot (Haitian fried pork shoulder - you must call ahead for this). Sides include white and brown rice and peas/beans, mac and cheese, plantains, and veggies like cabbage and collard greens.
Paulee has beef, chicken, and veggie patties ($2.50 each) sitting in a warmer/crisper behind the counter. You can get 15 chicken wings for $9.95 (three flavors: BBQ, hot, and jerk). She also offers homemade fruit juices like mango, passion fruit, soursop, orange, and pineapple for $4 per serving. $7.95 lunch specials (chicken items only) are available Monday-Friday and include a canned or bottled drink. The credit card minimum is $5.
The jerk chicken ($10.55) is delicious, but spicy as hell. It will set your mouth on fire. I love spicy food and can handle very spicy food and I thought Paulee's jerk chicken was legitimately hot. Unless you love spicy food, I do not recommend it. It would be nice if she made a milder version of her jerk chicken that more people could enjoy because the flavoring is great and the meat is quite tender and appetizing.
I recommend the oxtail ($14.95). It's the best Caribbean-style oxtail I've had to date. Naturally/inherently, oxtail doesn't come with a lot of meat; there's a lot of bone. Paulee's oxtail is the best I've tried when it comes to the amount of meat, the quality of meat, and the taste and texture. It's outstanding. Lip-smacking good.
The curry chicken ($10.55) is very good. It's served bone-in with delectable skin and tender, flavorful meat. It's worth getting. A satisfying chicken dish.
The cabbage and collard greens are terrific. I prefer the collards over the cabbage, but you can't go wrong with either one. Both are cooked and seasoned well; packed with flavor.
Also, the beef patties ($2.50 each) are the way to go. They are served temperature hot with a nice, flaky pastry crust and a strongly seasoned ground beef filling. It's savory and mildly spicy with a wonderful curry flavor. I haven't tried the chicken or veggie patties yet.
Even the rice and and beans are tasty. It helps when sauces from the other foods get mixed in, but the rice and beans are yummy enough to stand on their own.
In the end, I give Paulee's Place II 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. It's hard to find much tastier Caribbean food in metro Atlanta. -

A hidden gem!!! I was craving Jamaican food and have had a difficult time finding my go-to Jamaican spot in Atlanta until I met Paulees. Ya'll, I loveeee this place. It was a very straight forward, authentic Carribean spot with no bells and whistles but AMAZING food. Everyone was so pleasant and hospitable. I got the jerk chicken which I was warned it was very spicy. I can handle a little spice, but whoa buddy they were not lying! However, through my burning lips, I still enjoyed the oh so tasty and fresh dish! I can't wait to come back, I think this time I'll give their curry chicken a try.
